Objective of Project

To modify and assemble an existing automatic waste sorting macine capable of sorting our 4 different types of waste materials: Plastic bottles, glass bottles, aluminum and steel cans.

(C) Our Mission


Outcome of Project

To develop a state-of-the-art waste sorting machine capable of greatly reducing power consumption and cost of such machines, thus potentially lowering the carbon footprint of all reclamation plants.

To verify that it is a misconception that machines that are good and efficient must be costly and made of breakthrough materials.

Also, to find out the optimal speed for our machine (The magnets and actuator) to sort the waste at.

Skills

The project helped to deepen our understanding and broaden our awareness on the selected discipline as it helped us to understand better the different types of design processes, and the advantages and disadvantages of each and how they are used in different situations. It broadened our awareness on this selected discipline in the NTU School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering by seeing its applications in the real world and how they can be used to solve problems. It also deepened our understanding of mechanical engineering in what we have learnt in school, letting us see that there is no fixed solution to an engineering problem. These were achieved through the project briefings which gave us an understanding of design processes and types and the project itself which also deepened our understanding of mechanical systems, materials, electronics, sensors, and such.

How the New Learning can be Connected to what we learnt/are going to learn

At present, we can only make a connection to what we have learnt, as we have no knowledge of what we are going to learn as we have not learned the knowledge yet. This new learning can be connected to what we learnt in the sense that the knowledge that we have gained in design processes and in mechanical systems can be connected to what we learnt in school concerning design and mechanical systems. These skills and knowledge can be used in our later projects and work or can also be used to improve or past projects. The new knowledge can be connected using similarities that are present in the new knowledge and what we learnt.
